Velence Resort & Spa – Is It Really as Good as They Say?

Velence Resort & Spa is one of the most talked-about family-friendly wellness hotels in Hungary — and now I'll tell you what's really good and what I think could be better. Because there's some of both.

Where Is It and How Do You Get There?

The hotel's address is 2481 Velence, Béke utca 57, and its location is one of its biggest advantages: it sits directly on the shore of Lake Velence, just 45 kilometers from Budapest. That means a family coming from the capital can get there in about two hours, even in weekend traffic, without spending days in the car. Outdoor parking is available for a fee — worth knowing in advance.

A Four-Star Hotel – What Does That Mean in Practice?

Velence Resort & Spa holds a four-star spa, wellness, and gold-level family-friendly certification, and has also earned the KidsOasis five-windmill rating. This isn't just a piece of paper — the certifications indicate the hotel genuinely meets a strict set of criteria for serving families. On Szallas.hu it scored 9.2/10 based on real guest reviews, which is quite high.

The room selection is wide: Standard, Superior, Superior Plus, and Deluxe rooms, as well as connecting family rooms and two-bedroom suites with a living room and kitchenette. The latter is especially practical if you're traveling with small children and need extra space. One thing worth noting, though: when we requested housekeeping, the cleaners took our key card, and we had to request a new one at reception. An annoying detail, but a minor one.

What I really liked: instead of a key, you get a wristband that lets you into both the wellness area and your room. It's practical — no fumbling for a key, nothing falling out of your pocket by the pool — simply a smart solution.

The Water Park – The Heart of the Hotel

The 3,600 m² water park is without question the hotel's biggest draw. Indoor and outdoor adventure pools, thermal pools, a sauna park, massages, and beauty treatments await guests. The thermal water is rich in mineral salts, similar to the water at the Gellért and Széchenyi baths — invigorating and strengthening. And let's not forget the fitness area, right next to reception — I went down there every day!

The dry slides are really exciting — four in total: 2 start from the 1st floor, 1 from the 3rd floor, and 1 from the 4th floor. Some are slower and winding, some are faster and straight. Even first-time visitors will quickly find their favorite. Personally, I prefer the faster one.

The lazy-river-style current channel is a separate experience — a corridor where the water carries you along. The downside is that many people move slowly in the "fast lane," which takes away from the experience a bit. This is something that could be improved.

The sauna park is one of the best things in the whole hotel. There's a choice of several saunas — Finnish sauna, steam cabin, infrared sauna — and each one is properly hot, not one of those lukewarm "wellness saunas" that don't really do anything. Anyone who loves saunas will genuinely feel great here. After the saunas comes the Kneipp pool, which is my absolute favorite: you alternate between cold and warm water pools, and afterward your whole body feels completely renewed — somehow much lighter. I recommend this to anyone who hasn't tried it yet.

The wellness area isn't just about the pools, by the way. Massages and beauty treatments are also available, so if you really want to unwind, you can do that too. The thermal pools are in a category of their own — the water is rich in mineral salts, with effects similar to the Gellért and Széchenyi baths, invigorating and strengthening. It's not like an ordinary swimming pool — you really notice it, especially if you spend a longer time in it. The outdoor pools are available depending on the weather.

One thing that's bothered me from the start: outside visitors are also let into the baths, up to a maximum of 200 people in addition to hotel guests. In theory that's fine, but in practice it means you can't bathe in peace during peak times. This shows up in the current channel too — older visitors with grandchildren, or on their own, stand in the fast lane and move slowly, so you can't really get going properly. This personally annoyed me quite a bit.

Regarding payment: currently only card payment is accepted in the wellness area — debit card, credit card, or SZÉP card, though contactless SZÉP card payment isn't available yet. Don't expect to pay with cash. But for hotel guests (as opposed to outside visitors), it's obviously included for free.

Dining – Delicious, But Crowded

There are a few important things to mention about dining. There's a generous breakfast, a rich buffet dinner, and an à la carte option, plus a separate kids' buffet at dinner, and lactose-free, gluten-free, vegetarian, and diabetic-friendly meals are available on request.

But I think the standard has unfortunately dropped a bit. There used to be two restaurants open — now only one is — and this really shows in the crowding. You need to go down earlier for dinner and breakfast if you want to eat comfortably, because long lines form afterward. For a four-star hotel, I don't think that's acceptable.

On the plus side: there's always ice cream at dinner, in three flavors! That's always my favorite part. And if you're having breakfast or dinner, definitely ask for the lemonade — it's really good, and it's a small thing that creates a nice atmosphere.

For lunch we had pizza, which took quite a while to prepare — but at least it was tasty, so the wait was worth it.

One practical tip: skip the cocktails. They're not the best, and they're not cheap either.

Family-Friendly – They Really Get This Right

If there's one thing Velence Resort & Spa truly excels at, it's their family-friendly offerings. The three-story Jungle playhouse, the Play Island, the baby splash pool, and the children's pool are all excellently equipped. Childcare is available every day of the week from age 3, which means parents also get some time to rest — and that's no small thing.

Ele-Fülöp and Ele-Fanni, the two elephant mascots, appear daily and visit the children. During peak periods there's also an evening Mini Disco with them — a real treat for the little ones.

The children's discounts are also notable: children under 6 stay free, and ages 6–14 get discounted rates. For a larger family, that adds up to real savings.

Overall

Velence Resort & Spa is a good hotel — especially for families. The slides, the saunas, the Kneipp pool, the ice cream at dinner, the wristband entry, free stays for young children — these are all genuine pluses. But the crowding in the restaurant and the baths, having only one restaurant open, and the situation in the current channel's fast lane are all things that could use improvement.

If you go in knowing you need to eat early and that the baths will be crowded during peak times, you won't be disappointed. And if you're traveling with young children, this is one of the best places in Hungary for that.
